In film lighting, PRCDS usually refers to a Portable Residual Current Device (basically a safety circuit breaker).
-
What it is: A protective electrical device that cuts off the power if it detects leakage current (like electricity going to ground through a person).
-
How it’s used: Connected between the power source (generator or mains) and the film lighting equipment. Often built into distribution boxes or extension leads.
-
Why we need it: To prevent electric shocks and ensure crew safety when working with high-power lights, often in wet or outdoor conditions.
How does the PRCD-S protect you?
1. Protective conductor monitoring
The PRCD-S checks the proper functioning of the outlet before starting work. If a fault occurs, the PRCD-S cannot be switched on.
2. Undervoltage release
This prevents the connected devices from switching on again automatically. Power will only flow again if the PRCD-S is manually switched on.
3. Residual current protection device
The PRCD-S automatically checks the incoming and outgoing current. As soon as a difference exceeding 30 mA is detected, the device shuts off the circuit within 0.02 seconds.
4. Protective conductor detection
The intact protective conductor functions are checked before switching on and monitored during operation. This increases the level of protection against dangerous body currents.
